Bonobos are the fourth and most endangered great ape, located only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike their cousins the chimpanzees, who are known to kill each other, go to war and live patriarchally, bonobo societies are matriarchal, peaceful and devoted to social cohesion through sexual contact. Bonobos and chimpanzees are equally related to us, and our closest living relatives. Nicknamed the "hippie chimp", bonobos have much to teach us about our potential to live in harmony with our fellow man.

Lola ya Bonobo ("paradise for bonobos" in Lingala) is the only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos in the world. It is a magical place, located just outside Kinshasa, DRC, and founded by the amazing Claudine Andre. Here, orphaned bonobos from the illegal bushmeat trade are given a second chance at life, and to witness their joy in living is a lesson in grace and perseverance.
